Women’s economic independence is one of the foundations of gender equality. It gives women greater agency over their lives, strengthens household resilience and creates new possibilities for their families and communities.
In Mijwan, this transformation is taking shape through skill, craftsmanship and opportunity.
Today, approximately 16,000 bank accounts belong to the women and girls of Mijwan — a powerful reflection of the growing role of women in building their own economic futures.
From Skill to Sustainable Livelihood
At the Kaifi Azmi Embroidery Centre, traditional hand-embroidery is more than a craft passed from one generation to another.
It is a skill that can create sustainable livelihoods.
Women artisans are trained in the intricate art of chikankari hand-embroidery, allowing their craftsmanship to reach markets far beyond their village. Through employment opportunities and access to high-fashion collaborations, a traditional rural skill is finding a place in contemporary fashion.
This is the story of Sangita Prajapati, trainer and artisan at the Kaifi Azmi Embroidery Centre.
Her work represents the intersection of tradition, skill and economic opportunity — where craftsmanship becomes a source of dignity and livelihood.
Supporting her in the film are Khushi Prajapati and Alka Prajapati, adding another generation of voices and faces to this story of women’s empowerment.
Preserving Tradition, Creating Opportunity
Chikankari carries centuries of artistic tradition.
But preserving a craft does not simply mean keeping old techniques alive. It also means creating an environment where artisans can continue to practise their skills and earn from them.
The collaboration with Manish Malhotra has helped provide sustainable employment opportunities to women in Mijwan, connecting their traditional hand-embroidery skills with the world of high fashion.
