From August 15th to August 18th 2017, the team of Safe N’ Happy Periods visited Mijwan, a town known for the MIJWAN Welfare Society. Safe n’ Happy Periods, a personal social impact initiative was founded by Sarika Gupta, which is funded by family, friends and well-wishers. Looking at the current situation of myths, taboos and insufficient menstrual awareness, Sarika decided to take this initiative towards shame-free and pain-free menstruation time. The vision is to break the stigma around periods and to encourage girls and women to feel confident in their bodies.
We cannot thank Shabana Azmi Ji enough for giving us an opportunity to be at Mijwan. Mijwan is a true example of how a vision and intention together can change the face of a village. It was astounding and inspiring to see Mijwan bringing change and inspiring women to be confident and independent.
During our 3 days stay in Mijwaan, we conducted four workshops, through which we addressed almost 250 girls from Kaifi Azmi High School and Inter College, about 50 women from the Kaifi Azmi Sewing and Tailoring Center, and 200 girls from two nearby government schools.
Through our workshops, we talked openly about healthy menstrual practices and menstrual pain management with Yoga-Asanas. The workshops covered information about different aspects of Menstruation like proper hygiene, different types of sanitary products and the right way of disposing such.
One important aim of Safe N’ Happy Periods is also to allow girls and women to experience pain-free periods.
After the session, with girls and staff at the Kaifi Azmi School.
“It was a much needed workshop for our girls and teachers. We look forward to seeing you again to do more workshops for us” - Samina Ji Principal, Kaifi Azmi School.
Session in progress, with girls at the Kaifi Azmi Tailoring & Stiching Centre in presence of Samyukta Ji.
“We loved being with the team of Safe N’ Happy. Our girls learned so much about menstruation and pain reducing asanas. We were glad they came all the way to Mijwan” - Samyukta Ji, Head at Mijwan Stitching Centre.
We were amazed to see an encouraging response from participating girls and everyone at the Mijwan Welfare Society, despite the challenging environment they live in. Regardless of initial shyness, the girls and women from Mijwan contributed to the success of the workshops with their curiosity, their open-mindedness to trying the yoga asana and their readiness to share questions and experiences. To allow for a long-lasting impact of the workshops, the Safe n’ Happy Periods team donated yoga belts, sanitary pads, disposal bags and posters to the schools and the skills center. We feel that, visit of Safe N’ Happy Periods brought the women and girls in Mijwan a big step closer towards pain- and shame-free periods.
Touched by the feedback of girls at the school and skill centre and requesting us to come again to Mijwan, we are looking forward to be there again.
